We have a new rooster and hen. They are of the Light Brahmas breed.
Let me back up a little bit.
Last week we went to the Clackamas County Fair for a day.
Here are Michael and Nicholas testing out farm equipment….or maybe just enjoying sitting in something cool that we don’t really need.
We watched some of the goat show stuff….you know, because we are goat people now. And ate a lot of wonderful fair food. We also enjoyed some time out of the 100 degree sunshine while looking at chickens. There are so many different types of chickens. We all really enjoyed some of the roosters that looked like the one in the first picture.
On Saturday, I enjoyed some time with my friend Carol over at Diji Farm. We discussed goat stuff. Halle Berry was born at Diji Farm and we tried to decide which handsome buck we should breed her to the next time we decide to breed her. In the animal kingdom “arranged marriages” are normal….Ok, “arranged hook ups” would be a more accurate description.
While walking around her farm she mentioned that she wanted to downsize her chickens and would I be interested in taking a rooster and a hen together (apparently they are inseparable). I really wanted to do it but I knew Michael would need to be involved in that decision.
When I told Michael that it looked like the roosters we were admiring at the fair he said “yes” to the deal.
Michael and the boys picked them up on Sunday. We put them in the chicken tractor right by the chickens so they could adjust slowly.
In the evening, after the chickens were tucked in, we put these two in the coop. Everyone seems to be doing just fine. Michael and the boys witnessed a little fight between the new guy and our original rooster. Nothing that lasted too long or resulted in any injury (in other words don’t expect an invitation to cock fights at the farm). Mostly they just seem to ignore each other.
I sure think they are a handsome couple.
In case you are wondering the boy girl count still has the girls winning.
Girls: 21 Boys: 6 . I thought it would be much more fun to finally be in the majority but I’m not feeling much affability with the other girls.
Enjoy your day,
Karen
Maybe the new guy will keep Mr. Bad Manners Cranky Pants distracted so he will stop picking on you when you go in for feeding and eggs… I’m keeping my finger’s crossed… :o)
XO,B
PS Beautiful critters!
Yes, we are hoping that Jerk Rooster gets knocked down a peg or ten.
Hugs,
Karen
I don’t like chickens (I was attacked by one when I was 5. She ripped off all my clothes and I had scratches head to toe!) but these 2 new ones are beautiful. From a distance.
I understand how you feel. Our Australorp Rooster is a real Jerk. He attacks us often. Actually it has decreased a bit because we squirt him in the face with water….but still, I keep my eye on him when I’m out there.
Have a great day,
Karen
They are beautiful, as I witnessed yesterday. More eggs or more babies?
We had a wonderful time-quality time with you guys. It was such a perfect Fall afternoon, blue sky, out in the fields watching Michael and the other 2 kids romping and racing on ttheir rebuilt Honda and scooters or whatever they are called. Real guys full of fun, competition and energy. It was full of laughs, healing. Thank you for “helping” me “shop” your garden store. I am buying a wild King salmon tomorrow and we will enjoy your corn, cucs and zucchini with it.
Love
Karren
