Last year the garden was planted and then ignored. Cancer happens and every thing else goes on a back burner.
This year we are trying a different method of gardening. We decided to put down garden fabric to control the weeds. We have a ton of lovely compost and thought it was time to use it.
Michael suggested we buy our starts instead of starting our own. I liked the idea so I went to the local nursery and bought starts. I decided to only plant stuff for salsa. For the first time since my dear friend gave me her salsa recipe, we are out of salsa. My family depends on that salsa. Here is what our garden looks like this year. Love the look of that dark compost.
We put compost in our three raised beds as well.
I love rhubarb and actually ordered three new plants. For some reason, it is difficult to keep alive. I’m bound and determined to do it! I put fiberglass poles where the three plants are in hopes that people pay attention to them.
Our berries are continuing to put out lovely Marion berries. We were going to add more this year but January came and went and we didn’t purchase any. Next year we will.
Can you see the garter snake? He is pretty much in our garden daily.
Do you see his head?
Of course, when you get to a nursery you end up buying more starts.
I bought two artichoke plants. We had them last year but failed to do what we needed to do to help them make it through the winter. We also bought pole beans, cantaloupe, zucchini, broccoli, and surprise the nursery had our favorite cucumber. Suyo Long. It is nice buying starts but you definitely don’t find the unique things seed companies sell.
I love that Aunt Margie’s Salsa. I make a batch or two each summer as well. Also slow roasted tomato sauce! For our garden, after the harvest, we cover the beds with black plastic. It completely keeps the weeds out over the winter. Then in the spring, right before planting, I pull the black plastic off, put some compost in and all is good to go. I am definitely trying to find ways to make gardening easier…so I can keep at it in old age.
It is so delicious! I usually make a bunch each summer. I don’t stop until I run out of tomatoes.
Hugs,Karen
Hi friends,
Visiting Salt Creek is one of those places our bucket list. This foul disease has caused more pain than I ever thought I could live with. If there are no more setbacks, July 4th I am supposed to go into the hospital for stem cell transplant, my last and best chance for extended years. Please keep me in your prayers. We are so grateful Michael has had a full recovery.
we love you,
Barry and Saundr
So sorry to hear that you’ve had so much pain. I am praying that the pain subsides substantially. I will be praying that July 4th will be the day you will be free from this hideous disease. We would absolutely love to have both of you to spend some time on the farm with us. Love you both so much and will be praying constantly.A prayer for you: Please ELOHIM you are the All-Powerful One and with one breath you can cure Saundra. I also know that you are EL Roi who sees Saundra and knows her tremendous suffering. Most of all I’m asking that You, Jehovah Rapha would heal her, completely.I am thankful for all the wonderful doctors and tremendous work that they can do. But they practice medicine. YOU created it. Please Jehovah-Shalom, give her the peace that surpasses all understanding.
