So every winter the creek floods and a few times a year is turns our lower field into a giant lake. Here are some pictures of the field before it flooded.
And here are a few pictures of the field as the water was rising. This flooding was very minor compared to some of the water levels we have seen, but it is always mesmerizing to me to watch the water slowly rise into the field.
You can see in the above pictures the water rising in what we call the “drainage”, the lowest area in the center of the field. In really bad rainstorms, the “drainage” will just keep getting wider and wider, until the creek is flowing straight over the entire field, from left to right. But this time, relatively mild, thank goodness.
Cheers from the farm,
Michael
Surprising mild flooding for the amounts and duration of the rains we received lately. I’m ready for some dry days and warmer temps. I don’t remember if that is a hay field or pasture. Thanks for the update.
Hi there Dee,
the water rose quite a bit a couple days after these pics were taken, but overall it has been a pretty mild winter so far. Enjoying some COLD dry days right now! We had the field cut/baled one year, but it is primarily pasture, not the best quality grass to put up for hay. We hope to put a couple of steers down their this fall and raise some beef for the freezer.
