4) The Faithful
Moses’ parents were Amram and Jochebed. They were some of the possibly few Israelites who held to their belief in the one true God and did not worship the Egyptian gods.
When Moses was born they hid him for three months. Finally it was impossible to keep him a secret. As a woman of great faith Jochebed put Moses in a basket prepared for him and put him to float in the Nile River. She sent Moses’ sister, Miriam, to keep an eye on him.
I can’t imagine the faith that this woman had to literally put her child in the hands of God. God rewarded her with giving her back her son after pharaoh’s daughter adopted him. She probably only had him three maybe up to five years at the most. I believe that during that time she taught Moses about his people and their belief in the one true God.
Fast forward. Moses was 40 years old when he left Egypt. 80 years old when he returned. His parents were most likely dead by then. She would not have seen the way God would use her son. She had faith. She acted on that faith and like many people she probably didn’t live to see the fruit of her faith.
As parents we “train our children in the way they should go” but we may not get to see the results of that training. God is faithful. It is in Him we put our faith.
5) Moses’ good choice but a bad method .
At 40 years old Moses chose to associate himself with his people. He saw their suffering and wanted to help them. Excellent decision. However, how he chose to do that was wrong. He murdered an Egyptian slave master.
How might things have been different had Moses, in his desire to help his people, prayed and asked God what to do?
Moses chose association with a slave nation over royalty. God planned to rescue His people and Moses was His man. However, we can’t do God’s work on our own. We must do it His way and in His power. Anything else and he will mercifully let us fail lest we learn to look to ourselves and not to Him.
Moses was God’s man for the job, he just wasn’t ready for the job. It would take another 40 years as a shepherd in the dessert for God to prepare him for this job.
6) Mt. Sinai
Isn’t it interesting that God never told us exactly which mountain is Mt. Sinai? God appeared to Moses in a burning bush speaking His plans to him. Later Moses would receive the Ten Commandments and instructions on building the Tabernacle on that same mountain.
It is a religious and historic landmark.
It is probably because we would have ended up worshiping the mountain rather than the God who made it special. Can you imagine……”Disney Mt. Sinai”.
To be continued…..
Have a great day,
Karen
