Michael put a doggy door in Luke’s door.
Luke’s bedroom, which is in the garage, was very damp. Between the rain and the fog the air had a lot of humidity in it. Combined with Luke getting wet and bringing that wetness into the room, it was WET, all the time.
Michael also trimmed up the door (with the used table saw he just bought) so that it would shut.
Luke had no idea how to use a doggy door. As far as he was concerned we were asking him to walk through a door.
Enter Beggin Strips. There was a half used bag in his room when we moved in so I assumed that would be a good incentive.
One person was inside the door with a piece of the Beggin Strip and another person on the outside of the door with a piece of a Beggin Strip.
IN
OUT
And repeat. Over and over and over.
I guess you can teach an old dog new tricks. If properly motivated.
Have a wonderful day,
Karen
This is so cute how you taught Luke. I bet he was well fed at the end of his training session.
It reminds me how I taught one of “my” wild foxes to walk inside the house. I laid morsels of food at the open door and leading into the house about one foot apart. The fox kept stepping forward and eating the treats until he was about 5 feet into the house. The fox turned around and left when he was done eating. We had a lot of fun watching.
Good dog, Luke.

Wow, that sounds cool….and a little bit scary.
I would just like to see a live fox once in my life. I think we have foxes here in OR but I’ve not seen one yet 🙁
Take care,
Karen
Not as scary as the black bear cob lying on my front porch and stealing sunflower seeds that I stored for the wild birds. I went ahead and took some pictures through the glass. It was very dark though, only the security light. But I may post them anyway.
The trick with the animals is to never make them feel trapped. I am sure that if I had closed that door or stood between the fox and the door, the fox would’ve freaked out and acted unpredictably.
If you never place yourself between the animal and the way out, or between the mother and her babies, you should be just fine in the most majority of situations. I mean, 99.9%.
I hope you see a fox some day. They are pretty and very curious creatures.
Kimberly.
Wow! That would be awesome….to be inside the house with a bear cub right outside. Safe yet close enough to get a good look.
We just don’t live in as wild of an area as you must live.
We are in “the valley” and really only see coyotes, deer, and nutria (we kill those). We do have wonderful birds in our area.
I’m hoping to save enough money to buy a nice zoom for my camera. I would love to post more pictures of the birds we see.
Have a great weekend,
Karen
Cute pictures! Training is so much easier with those ever-so-tasty dog treats! Ours love theirs too!
Yes. Thank God for dog treats. We still need to work on the no going potty in the house. That one is a little harder.
Enjoy your day,
Karen
Grateful to hear … there’s still hope for us.
Yes. Although it would take a lot more than bacon for me!
Loved the “Letters From the Farm”. So hopeful. I had Joshua read it in hopes of giving him hope that our cat might just come back some day.
Hugs,
Karen
