It’s that time of year again. The time of year we gardeners love. Choosing the seeds you want to grow in this year’s garden. I am so excited because Michael’s latest project was building a homemade seed starting rack.

Homemade Seed Starting Rack

Bryn, our neighbor in our previous house, gave us her seed starting grow rack years ago. It was plenty big for our small garden. You may remember that rack from last year’s post.

That rack held four starting trays. Michael’s homemade seed starting rack will hold 12 starting trays.

We have a structure between the house and the garden. We call it the garden shed.

The back wall is solid but the three other walls are mostly clear plastic. There are also a couple of windows. Last year we put the grow rack in what we called the “sun room” inside the house. We have decided to put the new rack in the garden shed.

Michael moved some stuff around and made room for it next to one of the windows.

We will need to get more leek proof trays for all the space. Our friend Jo also suggested a thermometer to hang inside. We will know when we can put the seeds in there as well as when we may need to open a window.

Our seeds are here. Now we just need to buy the four-foot long florescent lights to hang above each shelf.

Besides being able to hold four times the number of trays, this rack will also allow us to let the plants grow taller.

It is amazing how excited we get for the new growing season. Maybe it is the thought of weather warm enough to grow produce. Maybe the thought of eating that luscious fresh produce.

What ever it is, we are ready.

Just over a month until the first day of spring. We should be well on our way to starts by then.

Have a great day,
Karen
