Joshua has enjoyed hunting bull frogs. They are the only thing that he is allowed to shoot whenever he wants. According to the Department of Fish and Wildlife, bullfrogs are invasive and destructive and should be destroyed. Music to a preteen, gun toting boy’s ears.
Usually he gets in the canoe and shoots from that vantage point. He has learned that it is hard to kill them with a head shot because their brain is pretty small. (He has killed a couple that way but it isn’t easy). Rather you shoot them in the middle of their back so the bullet goes through the heart and lungs.
Here is his latest catch. When he kills this many it is a sure thing that he will be eating frog’s legs.
He chops the legs off and skins them.
He soaks them in milk and then dredges them in flour with a little seasoning. He fries them up in oil and voila….dinner (for him, the rest of us don’t eat frog’s eggs)
Joshua says that they taste a little like chicken.
He has always been willing to try new food. I don’t think we need to worry about his survival should anything bad happen. Unless of course the only option for food is chocolate. My first born son doesn’t like chocolate. It has taken me a while to accept that.
Bon Appetite,
Karen & Joshua
Dear Karen, Yes to frog legs and no to chocolate???? Priorities… too funny. I remember a bunch of campers at a camp I worked at in high school would go bull frog hunting then have a frog leg roast….I never tasted them but my husband says they did indeed taste like chicken. So perhaps Joshua has good taste after all….perhaps…
Frog’s legs vs. chocolate. No brainer to me!
Oh well, at least he won’t starve to death 🙂
Enjoy the day,
Karen
That’s my boy!! So proud of you and your cooking skills.
I have 2 stories I would like to share with you, regarding frogs. They both involve my BFF. In high school, Jeanie had biology together and were teammates in the dissecting the frog lesson. We were to learn the biology of a frog. Our personal goal was to see if we could endure by not touching the frog. Our goal was met. Learning the guts of a frog was not. So thank you for the lesson meant for my high school lesson.
The next story involves Jeanie and I going shopping in Salem. We would have lunch at Meier and Franks(now Macys). We would always order the frog legs. Trying new foods is certainly an adventure.
Love,
Grandma
P.S.- Joshua, you take after your dad in sooo many ways. However, Your dad is a sugar tooth. He was probably 4. We were camping and as usual, that is when we eat all the fun stuff that we didn’t indulge in at home. Your dad got up during the night and ate all the chocolate(and more) that he could handle. He was so sick. Grandpa was up with him until “he got it out of his system.
Love and hugs,
Grandma
Ha! I still do that! Thanks for sharing Mom, love ya.
Do you still eat butter off the stick with your finger too?
Yes, he does. 🙂
He will be thirteen on 9/4! I’m still trying to figure out how to “hold him back”.
How are all of you doing? Michael and Joshua both said everything was lovely.
Hugs,
Karen
Congratulations to Joshua! Those look pretty meaty and I can’t recall if I’ve ever tried them. We don’t have bullfrogs down here, but I remember hearing them as a kid in the north. They can really make a ruckus at night.
