Karen and I have noticed now that spring is here and the good weather is back, so are our Great Blue Herons. Last year we had at least a couple of Great Blue Herons frequenting our pond and fishing the banks. Some say to scare them off to protect the aquatic life, but they are so majestic to watch. Over the winter, sightings became more rare, but they are back! Here is one I caught this morning sitting in a branch overlooking the pond.

They are so alert, when I poked my head out to take a photo he got spooked and flew off to the neighboring pond.
What a good way to start the day.
Enjoy yours,
Michael
I have only seen a great blue heron a few times. They are beautiful creatures and I thoroughly enjoyed all the pictures of yours.Have a wonderful weekend!
I feel so grateful that our boys are growing up seeing creatures daily that I didn’t get a chance to see until I was all grown up. We saw a Bald Eagle soaring over our pasture a couple weeks ago. Of course I didn’t have the camera then.
Nice captures, Michael.
We haven’t seen one this year yet. They do come to our pond every summer. They don’t seem to be bothered by our domestic ducks swimming at the pond every day. I hope to see one soon. They are so elegant and majestic.
Kimberly
Its funny you mention your domestic ducks, because the Herons don’t seem to mind our Toulouse Geese, but the geese sure don’t like the Heron hanging out on their pond. Last fall the geese took off across the pond making all kinds of noise and racket and chased away the Heron. It was quite a sight to see. Thanks for your comments as always Kimberly.
I have to agree with you. I too love seeing a blue heron. We have quite a few around here. See them flying back and forth between the river, the park, and all the sloughs. Any egrets? Thank you for sharing. I enjoy reading the posts from both you and Karen. Love to y’all in the Northwest!
Hey Aunt Ginny, glad you enjoyed the pics, I thought it was worth putting up here for others. We do get Egrets every now and then. We also had a pair of Green Herons last fall. Really neat as they are much smaller than the common Great Blues, and if I recall had much more ornate feathering. Love to you all in Cali, say Hi to everyone!
Wow! And thank you from a fellow lover of nature. One of those pics could be blown up and cropped into a postcard – the **DSC1835 pic. Love to you all,
Barry and Saundra
We figured you guys would really enjoy them. Although the pics never really capture the complete beauty of the animals, they are still great to look at. Have a great week!
