This morning another “first” occurred for the occupants of Salt Creek Acres. I was browning some cut up chuck roasts for a soup I’m making for dinner and I looked out of the front kitchen window to see a hawk under the front of Michael’s truck. We rarely see Red Tail Hawks doing anything other than flying. This one was eating a catch. I could tell by the way he kept plucking pieces off and then eating them.
I called everyone up to show them what was going on. It was a Red Tail Hawk eating something he probably snatched from the sky. Michael first took a video.
Michael started taking pictures but the hawk flew off with his catch. Here is what he left. We think it was a Flicker.
On a more cheery note, we keep the bird feeders full to help the birds get through the winter.
House Sparrows enjoying some seed in the front yard feeder.
This feeder on the side of the house had a pretty Orchard Oriole with a House Sparrow.
We also had quite a few Common Mergansers on the pond again. They seem to count our pond as a regular stop. It looks like their heads are red which would make them females.
About a week ago we saw a Bald Eagle flying low over the field and the pond. He caught a fish and flew off with it so quickly there wasn’t any time to even think about getting a picture.
Enjoy this Christmas season,
Karen
What beautiful birds you captured by photo. It’s so rewarding feeding our fine feathered friends.
MERRY CHRISTMAS.
Bird watching in the winter time is a joy.
Have a wonderful Christmas.
