Yes, it has finally happened, there are little bundles of baby goat joy here on the farm! The moms were huge, I referred to them as double-wides, and they were truly in need of an escort vehicle anytime they waddled around the barn. According to our breeding records they could have started kidding anytime this week, which was less than ideal as I was in Chicago for a work trip until late Thursday night.

Brown Sugar was the first to kid Thursday evening. Karen was at AWANA, Nicholas was at basketball, and I was in an airplane flying home, so Joshua was the man in charge of helping her clean the kids off and make sure they got their first feeding on mom. What a great job he did.

Then Friday afternoon Rose had her two little babies, a boy and a girl.

Here they are snuggled up together snoozing, at least trying to 🙂

When Rose finished delivering her two babies, we moved both Mouse and Blue from the main doe pen into a separate kidding stall; we knew it would be only a few hours until they kidded also. We monitored their activity from our barn cameras, and around 9pm Friday evening I saw Mouse had just had a baby, and Blue was in labor. Everybody get dressed, we’re going to the barn!

Mouse then delivered 4 babies; a girl and 3 boys. Her 3rd baby was breech so we had to intervene and help her deliver that baby. It was a very difficult labor for over an hour. But, all went well and she has four healthy little kids.

While Mouse was laboring to deliver her 4 babies, our little Bayou Blue was working hard to deliver her three little babies.

So in 24 hours we went from having no babies to having 11 babies. Whew! And thank the Lord, it mostly happened once I got back into town.

We are halfway done with kidding season. Up next should be Spitfire, Jesi, Sandi and Halle Berry. We are VERY excited about Halle Berry. She is our favorite goat, yet hasn’t been successfully bred the last two years. We took her to the Oregon State University Veterinary School to try and figure out why she can’t get bred. During their routine testing it was confirmed via ultrasound she is carrying a baby, yeah! We are so looking forward to what she has for us this year, she truly is a wonderful goat.

Sandi and Halle Berry, mother and daughter. Patiently waiting to have babies.

2019 kid count so far: 8 boys, 3 girls.

This group of babies are VERY friendly. If you are in the area and want to spend awhile snuggling baby goats, come on down!

Until next time,

Michael
