Splitting Wood for Winter

Every two years we need to cut and split wood for our wood burning stove. We have a large woodshed that allows us enough room for two years worth of split and stacked wood, and this fall it was time to replenish the supply.

Not sure if you remember from previous posts, Water Logging, but all of our firewood comes from Salt Creek, the creek bordering one side of our property. Each winter/spring logs are washed down from somewhere upstream, and many of them get hung up in our section of the creek, and we just drag them up and let them cure for cutting and splitting. We always have more wood than we need sitting in a pile for us each year.

Below are some pictures of our day, our borrowed log splitter thanks to our neighbor Nick, and a nice bucket full of split wood headed for the woodshed. The weather was perfect, a little foggy in the morning but cleared up for a nice afternoon.

We completely filled up the woodshed and still had quite a few logs left over. Yesterday, Karen and I went down to secure those logs so when the field floods they don’t float away. We used the tractor to stack them and then drove some T-posts in to secure them. This way we have our inventory of wood waiting for us for next time we need to cut wood, probably in two years.

We enjoy having so much wood available to us, and really enjoy having a wood stove. Nothing beats real wood heat, and we use our stove often.
