Guess what. We have three new goat bucklings on the farm. Ok, so the title gave it away.
This is what Brown Sugar looked like the day before she kidded. I figured she had more than two in there.
Her due date was Tuesday, March 14. We thought she might kid in the middle of the night again like last year. Worried that she would kid quickly again and not have time to get them all out of the sack before they suffocated, we decided to stay in the barn until she gave birth.
Sleep is very important to me. I went back to the house about 11:30, did some cleaning up and went to bed. Michael called me on the walkie talkie about 12:30 thinking she was going into labor. Joshua was waiting downstairs so he and I went back out to the barn.
By 1:30 I decided to go back to the house to get Michael some dry socks and make a Thermos full of decaf tea. I stayed with him for another hour and then called it quits. There is only so much of being cold and tired I can take. Ends up, Michael can only take so much too. He came back around 5:30, started a fire in the wood stove downstairs and fell asleep.
I went out to milk that morning (6:45) and no babies. So at that point I’m saying “whatever.”
We mostly left her alone. We took turns checking on her every hour. Dinner came and went. We decided to watch the last episode of Leverage which is one or our family viewing tv shows on Netflix, then Michael and Joshua went out to do the evening milking. A few minutes went by when over the walkie talkie we hear Michael saying, “three babies on the floor”. Nicholas and I ran out. What a good girl. She had all three mostly cleaned off and they were all ok. We arrived around 8:45 and think they were born around 8:30.
Now that I’ve gotten that out of the way, here are the pictures:
Two of them look almost exactly alike except one has more white on its body.
We create a space for them to go and be warm with heat lamps. Now they just need to learn about the door into it.
We put the little coats on them because the nights are pretty cold since the rain clouds are gone (finally).
We have two more goats with today as their due date. We are not expecting it to happen today and really hoping it happens during the day time 🙂 Then next Thursday, we have the last pregnant goat due (same day we are having a spring break play date with six boys).
I have some video I will post in the near future and I’m sure a lot more pictures as well.
Enjoy the sunshine,
Karen
Oh my goodness, things have been very very busy On the Banks of Salt Creek. Congratulations! They are adorable. Love the coats. Hope you can catch up on sleep and be ready for the next round(s)!
Caught up on sleep. I don’t know if I’m ever ready for the next round. AND found out another doe is pregnant. Must have been a fence breeding. Don’t know who the dad is and don’t know when it happened. So exciting….not! That doe will be one year old on 4/4……little tramp!
I’ll keep posting pictures and video.
Enjoy the weekend,
Karen
Congratulations on 3 babies, so cute! Hope you get some sleep before more make their appearance. Let me know when you are rested sufficiently for visitors. Smiles, Nancy
They are so bouncy at not yet three days old.
I’ve come to the conclusion that baby goats have to be the happiest things on the face of the earth.
Adorable. Bexen, our two almost three year old neighbor, just visited with them.
Fun times. Any time you want to visit just throw out a date.
Hugs,
Karen
What a busy life on the farm!!! Hope you all get some rest before thr next event!
Love Aunt Pinky
The next two due are inching along. We just realized that Brown Sugar’s doe from last year is pregnant! We don’t know which buck or when it happened. She will be a year old on 4/4. So that makes five does bred.
The little stinker!
We will keep sharing all the cuteness that comes our way.
Have a great weekend,
Karen
The little babies look adorable! How is Brown Sugar doing?
Oh, but I am sure she is ok. How are YOU doing?
Two more bucks this morning. Most goat owners would consider so many boys a bad thing, but for us, we get milking goats and don’t have to spend more money on more does.
It is so amazing how the personality of the doe is passed down to the babies. Brown Sugar has never been a super friendly goat….neither are her babies.
Rose, who kidded this morning, is super sweet and her babies immediately liked us petting them.
Praying for Mouse to kid by Sunday evening.
I’m doing fine now. Next week will be different. Very busy week ahead.
